Ingredients & Substitutions
- Gluten-Free Bread - We recommend using white gluten-free bread or sweet Hawaiian gluten-free bread to give the dish even more flavor.
- Eggs - Eggs are essential in this recipe because the protein in them acts as a binding agent to make the milk mixture thick and creamy as it bakes. Eggs also help make the casserole creamy on the inside, but crisp on the outside.
- Butter - Butter helps to richen the flavors of the dish.
- Milk - Milk has protein and sugars in it that combine with the eggs and bread to make a thick, creamy and delicious combination. We recommend using whole milk, but you can substitute for whatever milk you have on hand.
- Vanilla Extract - Vanilla adds a classic sweet flavor in French toast.
- Cinnamon - Cinnamon gives the dish its classic flavor.
- Brown Sugar - Brown sugar adds sweetness.
Complete list of ingredients and amounts is located on the recipe card below.

Expert Tips & Variations
- Make-ahead breakfast. We love making this dish ahead of time to serve the next morning on the weekends or for holiday breakfasts. Simple prepare the dish, but do not bake it in the oven. Instead cover the bread and egg mixture with plastic wrap and place in the fridge overnight. In the morning, remove the plastic wrap and bake in the oven.
- Add mix-ins. You can customize this dish by adding mix-ins like berries or nuts to the casserole before baking it in the oven.
- Cover with tin foil. If it seems like the casserole is browning quickly in the oven, cover it with tin foil and continue to bake.
How to Store Gluten-Free French Toast Casserole
- Refrigerator - covered in plastic wrap or in an airtight container for 3 days.
